Mary Robinson: The rights of the marginalized people

Mary Robinson

Over the years Gesine Schwan has pointed in her writings and speeches to the weakness of traditional governance that causes -- particularly in a globalised economy --  so much injustice, conflict, violence, human rights violations and environmental destruction. As  a  philosopher and political scientist she is well placed to develop and present  her  vision for a better world, based on values of openness, solidarity and democratic participation. Gesine’s extraordinary talents as speaker, writer and teacher will certainly bring her thoughts to the people with great strength and clarity.

It is most encouraging to hear somebody, who has a good chance to win the highest office in Germany, speak for the rights of the marginalized people in society, including the millions everywhere in the world. For me as former President of Ireland it is quite clear that the prospect of having a woman in this eminent role gives hope for a new culture of governance in the land.

Many friends world wide are watching this contest for the presidency in Germany with great empathy for Gesine Schwan. We wish her great success.
